Down Syndrome Awareness Month - October 25

Did you know? Some people with Down syndrome need help understanding grief and the grieving process.

While the grieving process is unique to each individual, there are some aspects of grieving that many people with Down syndrome seem to have in common. For example, some people with Down syndrome are confused by abstract phrases such as "passed away" or "no longer with us." Some seem to experience a delayed response to grief. Additionally, some people may grieve for longer than may be expected and discuss a death or loss in very current and immediate terms, even if the death or loss occurred many years ago. Our Resource Library has several resources on grief and loss and how to support a person with Down syndrome who is grieving in the Grief and Loss section.
