Did you know? Many people with Down syndrome have common characteristics but each person is unique.
Happy Down Syndrome Awareness Month! Throughout October, we will continue to post health and wellness information for people with Down syndrome, their families and caregivers, and health care professionals. We typically refer to "people with Down syndrome" as a group when we share information on our Facebook page and Resource Library. There are certainly similarities among many people with Down syndrome in terms of health promotion, medical care, and behavioral characteristics such as the groove and self-talk. However, those similarities serve as a guidebook, not a rule book. What is best for one person may not be best for another. Understanding commonalities while at the same time appreciating unique characteristics are both important aspects of our approach to supporting individuals with Down syndrome in their health journeys. Brian Chicoine, MD, provides more information in this article: Common Characteristics of Adolescents and Adults with Down Syndrome.
