Description:
Join the Adult Down Syndrome Center for a 2-part webinar series on gastrointestinal health!
Gastrointestinal (GI) is the term used to refer to the parts of the body involved in digestion. These include the GI tract (the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines, rectum, and anus) as well as the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas.
People with Down syndrome have several differences in their gastrointestinal organs and tissues compared to people without Down syndrome. These differences increase their risk of developing GI conditions such as swallowing issues, heartburn, celiac disease, and constipation. While some conditions may require seeing a GI specialist (a gastroenterologist), other conditions can be managed by a primary care physician.
In this 2-part webinar series, Brian Chicoine, MD, will discuss gastrointestinal health of people with Down syndrome from a primary care perspective. He will explain why some GI conditions are more common in people with Down syndrome and describe how a primary care physician can support individuals with Down syndrome in managing these conditions. He will also discuss ways to optimize GI health. Both presentations will conclude with Q&A.
