Our Summer Wellness Group is a 6-week group designed to support individuals with Down syndrome in making healthy choices while having fun. Each 90-minute session includes 4 activities:

  1. Ice breaker

  2. Physical activity

  3. Leisure activity

  4. Healthy snack

This week's group was facilitated by the Chicago Botanic Garden. Here is the full plan for the group we held on Monday:

Ice breaker

The participants introduced themselves to Dominique and Laurie from the Chicago Botanic Garden. They also shared their favorite flower or flower color.

Physical activity and leisure activity

The participants potted a variety of flowers in planters. They scooped soil and arranged the flowers in the planters. While this was not intense physical activity, gardening outside can be a great way to be active. Pulling weeds, watering, and picking vegetables and fruits in the garden are just a few ways to be active. Gardening opens in new window can also reduce stress, help us connect with nature, and give us a sense of accomplishment.

Healthy snack

The participants enjoyed peppers, sugar snap peas, and guacamole.
