Our Summer Wellness Group is a 6-week group designed to support individuals with Down syndrome in making healthy choices while having fun. Each 90-minute session includes 4 activities:
-
Ice breaker
-
Physical activity
-
Leisure activity
-
Healthy snack
Here is an example from the group we held on Monday:
Ice breaker
The participants spun a wheel with a variety of getting to know you questions. They talked about things they like to do and their "favorites" (movie, TV show, music, sports, food, etc.).
Physical activity
We started with stretches. We used a stretching video from YouTube.
Typically, we go for a walk outside. Due to the high temperatures, we did a Walk at Home video . The pace was a bit fast for some of us, so we lowered the playback speed (using the gear icon).
Leisure activity
We colored mandala window clings . Coloring is a great way to reduce stress and promote health.
Healthy snack
We made healthy banana splits! Each participant got 1/2 of a banana and a few scoops of yogurt. They picked their toppings - fresh berries (we used blackberries and raspberries), slivered almonds, shredded coconut, and chia seeds.
