Growth Charts for Children with Down Syndrome
The website of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has links to the Growth Charts for Children with Down Syndrome. There are charts for 0-36 months and 2-20 years. There are charts for weight, height, and head circumference.
The growth charts were developed based on the results of a study by Zemel et al. (2015).
What is used for adults with Down syndrome?
There are not height and weight charts specifically for adults with Down syndrome. The standard body mass index (BMI) charts are used for adults with Down syndrome. BMI charts/calculators are used to compare the person's weight for their height. The value is used to label the weight for height as below normal, normal, overweight, or obese.
In recent years, there has been concern and discussion about the validity and applicability of BMI to all people. In people with Down syndrome, there is very limited data to help answer questions of validity and applicability. However, at this time, BMI is usually looked at as the best measure we have and the one commonly used.
